Is menopause considered an illness?

Menopause is not considered an illness. Menopause is a normal response to hormone changes in the body. A woman's reproductive life normally ends around 50 years old, and symptoms of this can be heat and cold intolerance, emotional sensitivity, and decreased lubrication in the genital area. You can talk to your doctor if you are concerned about any of these issues.

Menopause may be many things, but it is not an illness. In the strictest sense, menopause is simply the time in a woman's life when her ovaries stop functioning and she no longer has menstrual periods. It's true that we often refer to hot flashes, mood swings, and other changes a woman may experience during menopause as "symptoms." However, menopause is no more of an illness than puberty is. Like the transition from youth to maturity, menopause is a natural and healthy life stage.

Just hearing the word “menopause” conjures up an image of a woman wearing a t-shirt in the middle of winter and still sweating, but natural menopause is neither a disease nor an illness. It is a normal biological process that all women experience sometime in midlife. Since there are a lot of symptoms associated with menopause, it is easy to relegate menopause to the disease category. However, if your periods stop before they should naturally, there may in fact be an underlying illness.

Menopause is not considered a medical illness, but a natural biological process that all women go through. Even though it is a natural and expected process, some of the symptoms can be very severe. Menopause is different for each woman, so if the symptoms are compromising your quality of life, talk to your doctor. There are treatment solutions that can help you through the process.
