Can wild yam cream help treat hot flashes and other menopause symptoms?

Wild yam cream is sold as a natural remedy to help reduce hot flashes. It is thought to work by supplying natural progesterone to the body. Although it is true that progesterone is helpful in reducing hot flashes, yam cream is not effective because humans do not have the enzyme necessary to convert the plant compound it contains into active progesterone in the body. The manufacturer is not required to disclose this information. To date, research data indicates that short-term treatment with topical wild yam cream by women seeking relief from menopausal symptoms did not cause any harmful side effects, but neither did it have any effect on menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes.
