Risks of taking melatonin include fertility issues, breast enlargement in men, decreased sperm count, and a lower libido. If you have depression before taking melatonin, there is the risk that use of this supplement will make your depression worse. If you use a melatonin supplement that has been derived from animal pineal tissue, there is the risk of contamination. The synthetic form does not carry this risk.
