What are the treatment options for stage 0 melanoma?

The most common-and successful-treatment for stage 0 melanoma is surgical removal of the mole or growth and a small part of the surrounding tissue. Because stage 0 melanoma affects only the epidermis, or topmost layer of skin, doctors will usually remove the entire growth and only about 5 millimeters of surrounding tissue. This is almost always successful if the melanoma is completely removed. After the initial removal, follow-up treatment includes yearly appointments with your doctor to make sure the melanoma hasn't returned.
