How do medications treat stage 4 melanoma?

Medications are usually used in the form of immunotherapy or chemotherapy to treat stage 4 melanoma. Immunotherapy involves injecting drugs into the body to help your immune system destroy cancerous cells. Chemotherapy treatment involves medications taken either by mouth or intravenously for several months. The strong chemicals in those drugs attempt to kill cancerous cells throughout the body. However, neither of those treatments has proven effective in getting rid of cancer by the time it reaches stage 4. At this point, other medications may be used to help reduce other symptoms that may be caused by the spreading of stage 4 melanoma to other parts of the body.
