How do medications treat stage 2 melanoma?

Medications are not generally used as a primary treatment for stage 2 melanoma. Instead, surgical removal of the mole or skin growth and the surrounding tissue is usually the first line of treatment. If doctors suspect that the cancer has begun to spread through the skin and into surrounding areas, medications in the form of chemotherapy may be used. This treatment involves taking medications either by mouth or intravenously for several months. The strong chemicals in those drugs work to kill cancerous cells.
