Can stage 4 melanoma be prevented?

Since stage 4 melanoma is the fifth and final stage of the cancer, you can help prevent melanoma from reaching this stage. Most importantly, if you're diagnosed with an earlier stage of melanoma, you must follow doctors' advice for treatment to prevent it from spreading and becoming stage 4 cancer.

In general, there are things you can do to help prevent melanoma in the first place. Because melanoma seems to be related to sun exposure, limit the time you spend in the sun, especially during its strongest hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you can't avoid the sun, wear sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Also, make sure to check your skin often-everyone should look for changes in moles and skin growths on their body, but people who have a high risk for melanoma or who have had melanoma in the past should see a doctor for yearly skin screenings.
