What are the effects of meditation?

Meditation helps the body to relax. Besides this, you will also begin to notice that you are more self-aware. You may gain a sudden insight or inspiration. You may start to feel more centered; sudden spurts of energy or alertness may occur. These effects vary from person to person, so be open to whatever comes. The overall purpose of meditation is the same for everyone. You are learning to relate to awareness itself, the purest level of experience. Besides providing relaxation, meditation makes you self-aware.

People meditate for different reasons: to feel calm, to diminish stress or pain, to get through a crisis, or to engage in a spiritual practice. We might approach meditation for specific reasons, and then discover that we want to attain a different level of consciousness or a deeper, more gratifying state of relaxation. While practicing meditation, we may feel more alert and resourceful in our daily lives.

The goal in meditation is to clear your mind of all thoughts. The first step: silence. Even if you use meditation only to sort out headache issues, discipline yourself to squirrel away five minutes of silence a day. To help clear your mind and meditate, pick a simple word (like ohm or Hawaii or supercalifrag—oh, you get the point) and repeat it to yourself over and over. Focusing on the one word helps keep distracting thoughts from seeping into your gray matter.
