What should I know before taking Chantix?

Chantix (varenicline) is a smoking cessation medication that is approved by the Food and Drug Association (FDA) to help you quit smoking cigarettes. When used with counseling or stop-smoking support, Chantix helps reduce cravings for nicotine and symptoms of smoking withdrawal.

Talk with your doctor before taking Chantix, as this medication may not be for everyone. If you have a history of depression or psychosis or have kidney disease or cardiovascular disease, your doctor will discuss the necessary precautions you must take while on Chantix.

You should know about the major warnings to consumers about Chantix (varenicline). While taking Chantix, some people have had changes in behavior, including hostility, agitation, depression and suicidal thoughts. It's not clear that the medication itself causes these changes, since nicotine withdrawal can also affect mental health. Tell your doctor if you have ever had depression, bipolar disorder, or another mental health issue. If you have any of the above symptoms, stop taking Chantix immediately and call your doctor.

A June 2011 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory also warns that people with cardiovascular disease who take Chantix face a small increase in cardiovascular risk. If you have a heart condition, talk with your doctor before taking Chantix. Don't forget that smoking is a major contributor to heart disease, so quitting is heart healthy.
