What medical problems may occur when taking varenicline?

If you take varenicline (Chantix) for smoking cessation, you must see your doctor regularly to check for the following medical problems:
  • changes in mood such as agitation and irritability
  • depression
  • suicidal thoughts or tendencies
  • allergic reactions such as swelling of the tongue, mouth, ear lobes, face or throat
  • hives, itching, blistering, peeling of the skin
  • skin ulcers or sores
  • difficulty breathing, chest tightness, cough, wheezing
  • fever, chills
  • dizziness, difficulty concentrating
  • a possible increase in heart attack and heart-related events in people who have cardiovascular disease            
Call 911 for severe allergic reactions including:
  • difficulty breathing, chest tightness, cough or wheezing
  • swelling of the face, mouth, lips or tongue
  • suicidal thoughts or tendencies
