What should I know when using naltrexone?

Howard J. Shaffer, PhD
Addiction Medicine
Naltrexone (Depade, ReVia, Vivitrol) increases the level of certain liver enzymes, so you should have periodic blood tests to check liver function while taking this medication for alcohol abuse. Abnormalities typically resolve once the medication is discontinued. Naltrexone also blocks the effects of narcotic pain relievers, including those used during surgery. If you require any type of surgery, talk with your doctor about discontinuing naltrexone before the operation.
