How effective is varenicline?

Studies show that people who use varenicline at the recommended dose of 2 mg a day are 3 times more likely to stay smoke-free. People who take 1 mg a day are 2 times more likely not to smoke. Varenicline seems to be more effective than nicotine replacement therapy. Varenicline has also helped people quit when they reduce smoking gradually over 3 months before quitting completely.

It is not known if varenicline is safe or effective for children and teens under 18 years of age.

Varenicline may not be a good option for you if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or may be pregnant. It is not known if it is safe for pregnant women.

You should not take varenicline if you are breastfeeding.
