Can varenicline cause changes in mood?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that varenicline (Chantix) carry a warning because mood changes may occur in people taking varenicline for smoking cessation. The warning lists the following as possible mental health problems associated with varenicline:
  • Extreme neuropsychiatric problems such as depression, suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide.
  • Exacerbation of underlying mental health illnesses.
  • Neuropsychiatric symptoms, including mood swings, psychosis and hostility.
