What are orphan drugs?

Some countries have laws that require researchers and pharmaceutical companies to give attention to rare diseases. That way, no matter how rare a disease is, patients can expect to find treatment and the orphan drugs developed to treat their rare disease.

While it may take time to accurately diagnose a rare disease, once diagnosis is made, there are numerous organizations that exist to help patients who have rare diseases to find the treatment they need.

The Office of Orphan Products Development, created by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, specifically devotes resources for rare diseases.
