How does ventilating anger do more harm than good?

It depends on how the anger is packaged as well.  Anger is a real feeling, but a complicated one to express because it is often displayed as an "attack" - rather than in a way that can be constructive and perhaps lead to a solution.  It often does not end up being "cathartic", but can leave us feeling angrier, and also leaving other angry people in our wake.  In addition, the research on the so-called "Type A" personality reveals that in fact it is when this personality style is accompanied by hostility that we see damaging effects on cardiovascular health.
