Is semen an effective antidepressant?

Dr. Michael Roizen, MD
Internal Medicine
Semen contains powerful-and potentially addictive-mood-altering chemicals, including testosterone, estrogen, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and prostaglandins. Some of these are absorbed through the walls of the vagina and are known to elevate mood. Though research shows that women who do not use condom during sex are less depressed, that doesn't mean you should practice unsafe sex. Studies have found no correlation between high-risk sexual behavior and lower rates of depression. So while I can think of no better mood elevator than great mutually monogamous sex, high-risk sex does not have the same benefits. After all getting an STD can be a real downer-or worse.
