Who is most at risk of malaria?

Malaria has been all but eradicated in most industrialized countries, including the United States. However, it remains a major problem in tropical and subtropical areas, particularly among poor populations in these locales. Infants, young children, and pregnant women and their unborn children all have the highest risk of contracting this disease, as they have little to no immunity against it. The largest number of malaria-related deaths occurs in Africa, among children under the age of 5.
