answer

Hair type is determined by the characteristics of the hair follicle from which it grows. Straight hair grows from hair follicles that are circular in cross section. Wavy or curly hair grows from hair follicles that are oval in cross section. Highly coiled hair, of the type that many African American individuals have, grows from flattened hair follicles. Because hair type is determined by the hair follicle, and because the hair follicle is determined largely by genetics, there is no currently known method by which to permanently change an individual's hair type.
