How does lysine work?

L-lysine is an essential amino acid that is needed for protein synthesis. It increases the body's ability to absorb and retain calcium, and so may have value in the treatment of osteoporosis. It also may have value in the treatment of herpes, in which it is thought to reduce the availability to the virus of the amino acid arginine, and hence inhibit replication of the virus.
