What is a flare?

With lupus, symptoms tend to fluctuate from mild to moderate to severe. When symptoms increase in intensity, this is known as a flare. People with lupus learn to cope with flares in a couple of ways. One way is by learning the warning signs that indicate a flare is coming. Another way is to notice carefully what events or actions bring on flares (e.g., being in the sun all day) and then avoiding those actions.
