Surgical removal of lung cancer and affected lymph nodes is the treatment of choice for early stage lung cancer. Patients who are candidates for surgery must also have adequate lung function that can tolerate removal of the lobe in which the tumor resides. All patients must receive an appropriate staging evaluation and an evaluation of their physical fitness for surgery. There are treatment alternatives for early stage lung cancer other than surgery. These include specialized forms of radiation therapy.
