Many different conditions can cause lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, from the common to the extreme. Probably the most common cause of lower GI bleeding is hemorrhoids. Due to the inflammation and minor tearing that can happen in the tissues of the anus, minor bleeding may occur when you have difficult bowel movements. Although this type of lower GI bleeding is common, you shouldn't assume that it is the only problem if you notice blood on or in your stool.
