Why is the law important for people with multiple sclerosis?

Approximately 60% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) are working at the time of diagnosis, and 40% of people with MS are employed after 20 years. For those who choose to stay in the workforce, it’s vital to know about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) and how to ask for a job accommodation. Learning about appropriate accommodation strategies could save your job. For example; under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) you have the right to take FMLA leave intermittently and to reduce your hours when needed. Discrimination can happen for a variety of reasons. Employers may lack of knowledge of the laws; employees may be fired once they disclose their condition, because an employer is uneducated about MS or has a preconception of MS based on past experience; or job accommodation requests may be denied. Some employers just don’t want to provide accommodations.
