As an older adult, how can I manage kidney disease with diet and exercise?

F. Michael Gloth, III
Geriatric Medicine
Exercise and weight control can help manage kidney disease by reducing the likelihood of developing hypertension and atherosclerosis, which can impair renal function. Some experts encourage people with kidney disease to eat a low-protein diet. But, remember, losing weight without eating adequate amounts of protein might result in muscle breakdown.

Although it is important to eat sufficient protein when maintaining a good exercise regimen, it is not necessary to exceed 100 grams of protein daily. Many older adults -- with or without kidney problems -- get inadequate amounts of protein. If you have kidney disease, you need to discuss any dietary regimen you're considering with your physician.
