Can maintaining a healthy weight improve chronic pain?

Howard S. Smith
Pain Medicine
Maintaining a normal weight is recommended for preventing or managing almost all types of chronic pain, especially to reduce back, hip, or knee pain, or the debilitating joint pain of arthritis. Being at a normal weight can also help those suffering with gynecological pain. Overweight women may have disruptions in their menstrual cycles due to an excess of androgens. There is also a correlation between being obese -- 20 percent or more over normal body weight -- and the production of insulin, which can occupy the hormone receptor sites necessary for ovulation. Staying at a normal weight can help to balance hormones and ease the pain of gynecological problems.
