Who is qualified to perform liposuction?

Arthur W. Perry, MD
Plastic Surgery
Liposuction is an incredibly safe procedure -- when performed by people who know what they are doing. The surgeon should be a true surgeon, trained broadly in surgical principles and specifically in liposuction. He should have been in a real residency program with graduated responsibility leading up to a chief residency. He should be certified by one of the ten surgical boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and should be operating within the anatomic boundaries of his specialty. Remember, the T in ENT does not mean thigh; it means throat! While it may seem obvious to the public, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has taken the bold step of recommending that only surgeons perform liposuction.

Like any medical field, liposuction is dangerous when performed by someone who does not know what he is doing. It is a real surgical procedure, with real potential complications. Even in the best of hands, problems can crop up. You will stack the odds in your favor if you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, with good credentials and with recommendations from other doctors or patients.
