For adults, most cases of laryngitis are temporary and aren't serious. Typically laryngitis is caused by viral infection that will go away by itself. Sometimes, however, laryngitis can have a more serious underlying cause. If you have severe symptoms or have hoarseness for longer than two weeks, you should see a doctor.
