How can pain be a good thing during labor?

As contractions begin to come frequently during labor, your pain levels may be rising so fast that you're about to throw concrete blocks at the next person who asks you if they can help. While it's of little comfort now, try to remember this fact: pain usually signals that your body is continuing to make oxytocin, the hormone necessary for labor to progress normally.
