What happens after knee replacement surgery?

Immediately after knee replacement surgery, short-term goals are infection control, pain management and starting physical therapy. After your pain is able to be controlled with oral pain medications, you will be discharged from the hospital to go home with close follow-up by your orthopedic surgeon. Continuing physical therapy by getting up and moving every day, strength and stablizing exercises and walking up stairs is vital to a successful recovery.
