What are the causes of knee pain?

Some of the most common causes of knee pain are swollen or torn ligaments, meniscus (cartilage) tears and arthritis. If an old knee injury was not properly treated, it may cause occasional or constant knee pain. Knee cap pain is common in women, especially runners; it happens when the knee cap slides out of position (patellar subluxation) and is often the result of a physical defect rather than an injury. A few other common causes of knee pain are tendonitis, bursitis, Osgood-Schlatter disease and iliotibial band syndrome.
