How does where you live affect your risk of getting kidney stones?

There is a geographic distribution of kidney stones in the United States. In the Southeast, there's a higher incidence of kidney stones, leading to calling that area the "stone belt." There are several reasons for why this is: the highest temperatures, the highest incidences of diabetes and also the most sunshine in these areas. All these factors are linked to kidney stones. Around the world, there is also a stone belt in the Middle East, where there is also a very warm climate. But other extremely warm geographic regions such as the outback of Australia have lower rates of stone disease, so we know that climate alone is not the only factor.
