How does stage 4 kidney cancer affect the body?

At first, stage 4 kidney cancer affects only the kidney cells (renal cells). It's believed that the cancer begins when the DNA for those cells is somehow damaged, which leads to an overgrowth of cells that form a tumor on the kidney. In stage 4 kidney cancer, the tumor can be of any size, but it's often very large and can cause problems within the kidney. At this point, the cancer has also spread past the kidney and into the adrenal gland, major veins, lymph nodes, and distant organs.
