How can I prevent an embolic stroke?

The following suggestions can help prevent an embolic stroke:

  • People with atrial fibrillation (a common heart rhythm disturbance) or mechanical heart valves may benefit from warfarin.
  • Control blood pressure and cholesterol levels; stop smoking; exercise; control weight.
  • If you are a woman at high risk for stroke, consider taking low-dose aspirin.

By reducing certain known risk factors, a person can reduce their chance of having a stroke. This can be as simple as eating healthier, exercising more or stop smoking. In some cases a physician should get involved to treat related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol.
