Is impetigo contagious?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Impetigo is highly contagious. Impetigo can spread rapidly throughout the body after it first appears. Impetigo also spreads easily from one person to another, particularly among small children and infants. If your child has impetigo, covering the sores with gauze can help prevent spreading. Keep his or her bath towels, linens, and clothes separate from those of other family members.
