How effective is glatiramer?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Glatiramer reduces relapses by about 30% for people with relapsing-remitting MS. In people with relapsing-remitting MS and those with only a first episode of MS, it can help slow brain and spinal cord damage, which may slow disability. Glatiramer is as effective as interferon beta for reducing frequency of relapses and preventing MS from getting worse. Studies have not found it effective for progressive forms of MS.
