  Neurologists and neurosurgeons treat hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus, commonly referred to as "water on the brain" is the result of cerebrospinal fluid buildup or obstruction. Cerebrospinal fluid accumulation can increase pressure and cause mental, behavioral, and physical changes. Neurologists can diagnose and medically treat hydrocephalus. If there obstruction by a tumor or brain swelling, neurosurgeons may insert a ventriculoperitoneal shunt that will divert excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain into the abdomen or chest. This will decrease intracranial pressure. The primary cause of hydrocephalus will necessitate a referral to a pediatric neurologist and/or pediatric neurosurgeon.
