Hydrocephalus is often caused by other illnesses such as tumors, infection and bleeding in the brain. These conditions can cause either a blockage of cerebrospinal fluid or overproduction of the fluid, both will lead to an excess of fluid in the brain. Infection may also come into play after treatment for hydrocephalus has begun. When a shunt is placed in the brain to drain the fluid, care must be taken to minimize bacteria that may cause infection. If an infection occurs the shunt may need to be removed or other treatments may be needed to preserve the shunt's ability to drain the excess fluid.
