Some mildew removers contain sodium metabisulfite, a chemical that produces an extremely potent respiratory irritant, sulfur dioxide. This irritant can trigger severe respiratory distress in sensitive people. Look for mildew removers that contain chlorine bleach, as these will do the job without triggering respiratory attacks. Or make a dilute solution of chlorine bleach and water (1/4 cup bleach per gallon of water) to clean mildew. Always make sure to use these solutions in a room with good ventilation.
