Should hospice care only be considered if death is near?

In the perfect setting, hospice care would be initiated well before death is near -- like months. This would enable your hospice team -- nurses, social workers, chaplains, aids, volunteers -- to establish a trusting therapeutic relationship with you and your family prior to that time. Hospice teams are trained to help you embrace life and accept death as a natural part of it. Those patients who receive hospice care for the immediate death only do not reap the full benefits available from these trained, compassionate teams.
