How can I stay fit during the holidays?

During the holidays it can be tempting to skip exercise. Try these tips for sticking with your fitness routine this season:
  • Exercise in the morning. Getting your workout out of the way in the morning clears your schedule for holiday activities and makes you more likely to engage in healthy behavior for the rest of the day. Studies have shown that morning exercisers move more throughout the day and are less likely to give in to food cravings.
  • Change your workout. If you're not thrilled about exercising during the holidays, switch up your routine. Taking a fun class, working out with a friend or relative or finding a new walking route can help you look forward to exercising. It can also force your body to use new muscles so you get better results.
  • Sneak in exercise. You don't have to hit up the gym to get a workout in when you're away for the holidays or playing host. Go for a walk with loved ones after dinner, engage in hard-core housecleaning, have a dance party or play touch football in the backyard. While it may not feel like you're working out, your body will get fitness benefits and you'll burn calories.
Staying fit during the holidays can be a difficult task. It is important to remember that to stay fit the same principles apply as for the rest of the year. The two mainstays to a healthy lifestyle and to maintaining fitness are diet and exercise, both of which tend to be lacking around the holiday period. It is crucial to remember moderation, as there will be lots of tempting food and drink. It is okay to indulge a little bit, but if your goal is to stay fit try to have smaller portions. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should not give up on your exercise routine just because of the holiday season. In fact, this is probably a great time to boost it up a little, as you may be eating more than usual. Try to add a few extra minutes to your run or go to the gym one extra day a week during this time.
