According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every six adults has high total cholesterol. Surprisingly, this is 50 percent less than previous years. High cholesterol is found in more women in the United States than men. Those with high cholesterol double their risk of heart disease. Likewise, heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, with about a half million people dying from it each year.
