How effective are statins?

Statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack, angina, or stroke), death from any cause, and the need for surgery to improve blood supply to the heart. One analysis estimated that over 5 years, 18 out of every 1,000 people who took a statin would avoid having a first cardiovascular event.
