How effective are thiazide diuretics for treating blood pressure?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

First-line drug treatments for high blood pressure include ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), calcium channel blockers (CCBs), and thiazide diuretics. These drugs are all effective in lowering blood pressure and preventing cardiovascular complications. Many people need 2 or more drugs to control their blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics help increase the removal of salt and fluid by the kidneys.

Several thiazide diuretics are available in the US. These include chlorothiazide (Diuril), hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide, Oretic), hydroflumethiazide (Saluron), and methyclothiazide. Chlorthalidone (Thalitone) is a thiazide-like diuretic with similar properties.

Many other products combine a thiazide diuretic in a single pill with a drug from another class, such as an ACE inhibitor (Accuretic, Capozide, Lotensin HCT, Prinzide, Quinaretic, Uniretic, Zestoretic), an ARB (Atacand HCT, Avalide, Benicar HCT, Diovan HCT, Hyzaar, Micardis HCT, Teveten HCT), a beta blocker (Corzide, Dutoprol, Inderide, Lopressor HCT, Vaseretic, Ziac), or others (Aldactazide, Amturnide, Dyazide, Hydra-Zide, Maxzide, Tekturna HCT).
