Can a hernia be cured?

  • The only way to cure an abdominal wall hernia is with surgery.

Umbilical hernias in newborns are the exception, often healing on their own before the child is two years-old. Other hernias need surgery to reduce the hernia bulge (push the intestine or abdominal organ back behind the abdomen wall) and repair the opening in the wall. Factors such as congenital weakness in the abdominal wall, chronic illness, injury, and smoking do increase the risk for recurrent hernias.
