What should I expect after hernia surgery?

Well, it depends on how the hernia surgery is performed. If it’s done openly, or you have an incision, you need to keep that incision clean and dry. Afterwards, you're going to need an ice pack to help you with swelling too. Another good thing to remember is to avoid strenuous activities while you're recuperating.

If your surgery is done via laparoscopy, it will involve small puncture wounds, rather than a big incision. The advantage of that is it requires less wound care. You're able to resume normal activities a lot sooner with laparoscopic surgery. But you will still be limited immediately afterwards for a few weeks, which is a lot less time than an open procedure.
