Are there alternative treatments for a hernia?

Talk to your doctor before using any alternative treatment option. Exercises like tai chi may help with some forms of pain management, but are generally not recommended for people with hernias; any exercise program should be cleared with your doctor. Although an abdominal hernia can be reducible, do not try to push or tape your hernia down. Taping or using bandages increases the risk of infection, incarceration, and strangulation. Sometimes hernias will heal on their own, but most will require surgery to fix them permanently. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a hernia belt (truss) prior to surgery.
