Is a hernia truss often used to treat a hernia?

A truss, also called a hernia belt, may be prescribed for wear over short periods of time, particularly before hernia surgery. However, a truss is not a common treatment option for most hernias. Trusses are used with smaller hernias located in the groin or lower abdomen in most cases, and not recommended for larger hernias because of an increased risk for incarcerated or strangulated hernias developing. Wearing a truss as an alternative to surgery is not recommended.
