Breadfruit is a starchy bland food that is known for its high carbohydrate content. Breadfruit is the size of a large melon weighing two to five pounds. The fruit is a good source of Vitamin C. Breadfruit is an important staple in the Pacific islands and the Caribbean. It grows on trees and is covered with scaly green rind. The flesh resembles a potato when unripe and can be eaten at this stage. As it ripens it softens and is creamier and stickier when cooked. It is not as sweet as a mango or papaya.
