What are N-acetylcysteine (NAC) supplements?

Bryce B. Wylde
Alternative & Complementary Medicine
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine, although unlike ordinary cysteine, which occurs only in protein foods, NAC is produced in the human body. It plays an important role in the liver’s natural detoxifying activities and is metabolized as glutathione, a potent antioxidant, chemical detoxifier and immune system component that cannot itself be easily absorbed orally.

For this reason, NAC is now under serious investigation as a supplement. In hospital settings, NAC is important in treating patients with acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) poisoning and is one of the most effective available chelating agents, those valuable chemicals that can clear the body of heavy metals. NAC also acts to break up mucus, and so has proved useful in the treatment of such diseases as influenza and bronchitis. Its usefulness in cancer and many other diseases is currently under investigation.
