People with hepatitis C may not have any symptoms or have only mild symptoms. Symptoms begin an average of 45 days after infection. Hepatitis C symptoms are often mild and flulike, and are mistaken for other illnesses. Hepatitis C is often not suspected until the onset of liver damage such as cirrhosis has occurred, which can be 20 years or more after initial infection.
